Baush & Lomb was founded in 1856 by optician John Jacob Baush and his friend Henry Lomb who originally supplied a $60 investment into the Rochester, NY optical supply company, which originally sold monocles and later rubber eyeglass frames. By WWI Baush & Lomb was making optical equipment for the American military, and in 1936 they were asked to create anti-glare sunglasses for pilots. The result was the Ray-Ban aviator, the first of eyewear icons to comes. The Ray-Ban Wayfarer was introduced in 1952.
