How does a designer continue to innovate while staying true to their identity? It’s a tricky balancing act and we think Thom Browne is doing a bang-up job of it. The brand’s clean lines, carefully wrought details and new approaches to the classics have spawned some new love children, and we are excited to have the latest results in shop.
Flat Lenses Flash Mirror
The latest issue include this sunglass gem. It’s based on the classic aviator, but as always, Browne has created something new. With its acetate lens inserts, flat base-curve lenses, flash gold mirrors, titanium construction, signature red white and gold temple tips and as expected perfect mix of exquisite details and lack thereof.
Luckily Browne designed a companion frame in square, shown here side by side with its more traditional counterpart:
TB 015 Limited Edition – Badass Aviators
A sunglass on steroids, these up- and over-scale aviators are a kickass contribution to the pilot eyewear legacy. Nuanced adjustments to proportion make these gold-on-gold bad boys feel larger than life.
Originally designed for the runway, these Thom Browne aviators were produced in very limited run.
Photographer Polly Borland has an exceptional eye. It only makes sense that she wears exceptional eyewear. Here she is, pictured with her son Louie, at our West Third Street shop. For herself, Ms Borland selected tortoise Celines with a custom green, gradient tint.
Fendi heralds their unique “frame in a frame” with this stylized video featuring the singer Kiesza. Look out for Fendi designs like their striped “Pequin” motif. The filmmakers play with light and shadow in a way that mimics the way light moves through the multiple layers of the eye-catching Fendi color block sunglasses.
We are excited to announce the newest addition to our designer eyewear lineup, Italia Independent. Think of it as a “Made in Italy” reboot: fun colors, innovative shapes, brand new materials. Eyewear that is full of life. Glasses that shout out to be touched and felt.
Founded by Lapo Elkann and others in 2007, the brand aims to re-invigorate the Italian tradition and be independent of stereo types, fusing tradition and innovation. Elkann’s fashion sensibility (he is a member of “Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed Hall of Fame”) as well his relationship with Fiat and Ferrari, some of whose technologies are carried over into the eyewear, makes him the ideal person to spearhead their vision.
We got a great shipment of Italia Independent sunglasses and opticals, too. But for the moment we’ll share some of the highlights of the I-I sunglass collection.
Fabulous in Violet
We were blown away by the personality of these oversize violet sunglasses. The shape is based on classics of the past, but here I-I has come up with something entirely new, adding a facet here, a curve there. The matte violet varnish gives these frames a great look and feel. And gradient lenses complete the look.
Why should Teddy Bears have all the fun? Sometimes you just want to snuggle up with your eyewear. Well, at least we do! And there are no better snuggly sunnies than these velvety wayfarers from Italia Independent. The sunglasses are as soft as they look. But don’t take our word for it…
And if velvet alone is too sweet, how about a measure of hand-applied studs, silver or gold, to ramp up the attitude?
I-I doesn’t disappoint in the round department either. We are big fans of circular eyewear, and this hot pink number (also available in camouflage) has us turning cartwheels.
We’re seeing a lot of flash mirror coatings these days. Designers from Thom Browne to Ray-Ban have taken up the cry, but the flash mirrors on some of these Italia Independent lenses are brilliant enough to rival the sun. Take for example these fabulous butterfly sunnies in neon orange:
Hot or Not?
Some of the eyewear we received are made with a special thermic treatment that changes color at 30 degrees C, some revealing animal prints when the mercury rises. You’ll just have to come in to see for yourself if you’re hot or not, and in the meantime check out our gallery below for more Italia Independent looks:
You may not know it from his troubled Criminal Minds persona Derek Morgan, but longtime customer Shemar Moore is one of the friendliest actors working in Hollywood today.
Here he is back in his Young and Restless days at our West Hollywood shop:
Recently Shemar has been posting gorgeous pictures of himself and our eyewear on his instagram. We couldn’t help ourselves from sharing, but don’t take our word for it, head over there and follow him for yourself! (You can follow our instagram here)
We can’t wait to see his new romantic comedy The Bounce Back, currently in production, that he is both starring in and executive producing. Proceeds from his BabyGirl clothing line go to support the National MS society.
Trunk Show featuring the latest eyewear from Oliver Peoples. We will previewing every frame in every color from the Oliver Peoples S/S 2014 collection, as well as their new California-inspired line West.
Word up! Dan was elated to reunite with longtime customer and Cameo frontman Larry Blackmon. Cameo was most well known for their songs “Word Up” and “Candy” among others, their infectious dance grooves, and Larry’s unique voice. Lucky for Dan, Larry left his signature codpiece at home (that would have been awkward).
We have loved the playfulness of Miu Miu sunglasses from the moment we laid eyes on them. And now Miu Miu has released a super fun Spring/Summer 2014 campaign video, just long enough to whet the appetite. The video was shot by Inez & Vinoodh with a nod to video game pacing and techno sounds.
The video stars fashion icons and it-girls Elle Fanning, Bella Heathcote, Elizabeth Olsen and Lupita Nyong’o.
Round eyewear has been all the rage these days, and no one is doing it better than Mykita. These round sunglasses seem to jump right off the shelf, due in no small part to their brilliant purple blue color.
Round and Around We Go
If you prefer something a bit softer, Mykita has designed another pair of round sunglasses in plastic, pictured here in a creamy caramel.
One of our favorite frames in the shops right now, these very pretty sunglasses from Masunaga are exquisitely detailed. A titanium core translates to comfortable and lightweight. The metal is finished in gold with soft matte pink highlights.
A delicate pink stripe runs down the elegantly contoured temples.
And the icing on the cake – tiny typographic details hand-etched into the metal around the lenses.
The video, which features models Chris Brown and Petie Sjogren is beautifully shot in the Pacific ocean by Barton Perriera and cinematographer president Tim Cadiente. It is a perfect vehicle to show off Barton’s latest eyewear, designed right here in California.
It’s the classic tale of wanderlust. Boy’s airstream is stuck on a tugboat, boy consults his compass, girl extends her spyglass, girl yells into a megaphone, boy shows off his semaphore skills. The two are finally connected on the dramatic setting of abandoned lighthouse? in a collision of wind, waves and high fashion.
Cari Rae’s seductive singing inspired the mood for this video. An exclusive recording of her song “Run” for this campaign.
We recently got a shipment from Ray-Ban in our Westwood Village shop that really piqued our interest. Ray-Ban is always coming up with something new, but there were too many notables this time for us to keep quiet.
Clubmasters fold and go platinum
Although not the first sunglasses to fold, we think these folding Clubmasters are already a collapsible classic. With traditional clubmaster styling and sturdy double rivet details on the hinges, they just feel very cool.
Another addition to the family is the Clubmaster Aluminum that we’ve been waiting for. It’s stunning in brushed silver and gold details.
Wayfarers go on a diet and show some skin
A new skinnier Ray-Ban has come out with slimmer profile and lighter in weight. Part of Ray-Bans Liteforce Tech series which is made from a kind of flexible “thermoplastic”, they are extremely comfortable.
Aviator Rimmed in White
Another Ray-Ban icon that got a new look is the aviator. We think this one in gold rimmed with white is extremely hot. After all, isn’t white the sexiest color?
