Elie Saab Eyewear SS17

Elie Saab Eyewear

Elie Saab has just dropped his first eyewear collection. Distribution is extremely limited, and we are excited and proud to be carrying Elie Saab Eyewear at our shops and online.

It goes without saying that the finest materials were used. Saab selected Zeiss as partner for the lenses and barely-there gold mirror coatings.  Frame surfaces are plated in gold or palladium.

The Couronne (French for crown) styles stand out with their harmonious combination of metal and acetate. A gold foliage design drapes the top of the frame. Couronne styles are available in round or aviator. The acetates colors are characteristic of the Elie Saab house and are generally soft hued, with the exception of the round couronne which also comes in black – the only one in the collection.

The Chaine (chain) designs evoke the feel of  twisted metal. Whereas Couronne is a reference to nature, Chaine brings to mind a modern,  industrial sensibility. The chaine motif is available in the highly geometrical circular and square forms and in two colorways – gold or palladium.

The Diamant (diamond) style stands alone. Diamant features gold netting at the corners of the frame, which is then further embellished with Swarovski crystals. This idea feels very in line with the intricate stone and bead work of Elie’s Saab’s haute couture. Diamond faceting demands an increase in the thickness of the lens. Shimmering details all work together to create a fairytale effect.

What’s next?

For their first eyewear collection, Elie Saab went all out with details, but stayed reserved with respect to shape and color. Round, square, aviator; gold, silver – the basics. But runway looks from Elie Saab’s FW17 ready to wear show in Paris hinted that Saab will be pushing the envelope with things to come: organic and more inventive forms; eyewear that combines acetate fronts and metal temples; a larger range of colors from white to navy blue.

With a distinctive voice, Elie Saab has made a bold first foray into eyewear. We look forward to seeing more from the line as it continues to develop.

Summer 2015 Campaign Video

We try to bring you photos, video and news from the optical designers around the globe but sometimes we like to bring you a little promotion of our own.  Recently, DDOO created a new video to showcase some of our favorite lines, shot in some of our favorite LA locations: Royce Hall at UCLA, in a convertible driving down Sunset Blvd., and in the sand at Manhattan Beach.  The film features eyewear by Mykita, Barton Perriera, and Dan Deutsch Eyewear.

Fendi heralds their unique “frame in a frame” with this stylized video featuring the singer Kiesza. Look out for Fendi designs like their striped “Pequin” motif. The filmmakers play with light and shadow in a way that mimics the way light moves through the multiple layers of the eye-catching Fendi color block sunglasses.

We have loved the playfulness of Miu Miu sunglasses from the moment we laid eyes on them. And now Miu Miu has released a super fun Spring/Summer 2014 campaign video, just long enough to whet the appetite. The video was shot by Inez & Vinoodh with a nod to video game pacing and techno sounds.

The video stars fashion icons and it-girls Elle Fanning, Bella Heathcote, Elizabeth Olsen and Lupita Nyong’o.

Barton Perreira 2014 Campaign Video

Barton Perreira 2014 Campaign Video

The video, which features models Chris Brown and Petie Sjogren is beautifully shot in the Pacific ocean by Barton Perriera and cinematographer  president Tim Cadiente. It is a perfect vehicle to show off Barton’s latest eyewear, designed right here in California.

It’s the classic tale of wanderlust. Boy’s airstream is stuck on a tugboat,  boy consults his compass, girl extends her spyglass, girl yells into a megaphone, boy shows off his semaphore skills. The two are finally connected on the dramatic setting of abandoned lighthouse? in a collision of wind, waves and high fashion.

Cari Rae’s seductive singing inspired the mood for this video. An exclusive recording of her song “Run” for this campaign.

An inside look at Mykita’s craftsmanship – VIDEO

inside look at mykita craftsmanship

New Making-Of Videos from Mykita

Mykita just released a series of videos that allow us an inside peek — not only into their creative process, but into the manufacturing process as well. Their impeccable craftsmanship and creative ideals carry through to these videos – detail oriented and engaging. Have a look at the elegant way craftsmanship and technology – the human hand and the machine — come together in the Mykita Haus in Berlin.

The first of several “making of” videos, this one shows us how the metal frames come to be, in this case the Mykita Coco.

The making of Mykita acetate frames follows with the genesis of the Mykita’s Wynona.

In 2007 Mykita introduced their proprietary material Mylon. In perhaps the most dramatic video of the lot, the Mylon frames emerge science-fiction like, from the ether.

Aluminum Eyewear

YouTube video

A blast from the past brings us the Ray-Ban Clubmaster in a new incarnation. Ray-Ban’s iconic style, first introduced in the 1980’s was modeled after browline glasses first made popular in the 1950’s.  Although some predecessors were available in aluminum, this is the first time Ray-Ban has released the Clubmaster in the lightweight metal, giving their frame a what’s-old-is-new-again sleek look and feel. Available in gunmetal, bronze, silver, and black.
